Jewelry design is the art of crafting or creating technical plans for rings, earrings, bracelets, and other items of jewelry. The profession, which is related to goldsmithing and metalworking, is one of the oldest occupations in the world. If you’re interested in applying your artistic tastes to the creation of jewelry, then you should consider enrolling in an online certificate program in jewelry. An accredited online jewelry certificate program is a good option for students who have no background in the trade or for those who want to improve their skills. Certificate programs in jewelry are offered by colleges and universities on campus and online. Although the on-campus experience has its advantages, the distance learning format may be a better choice for working students who don’t have the time to go to and from class. Instead they can complete their assignments in their own time without having to work around other obligations they have.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in Jewelry

Online jewelry certificate programs provide students the essential skills and knowledge that will enable them to create production and unique jewelry items. They may enroll in courses such as jewelry design, metalsmithing, piercing and sawing techniques, and mechanical drafting for jewelers. A jewelry design course discusses the illustrative techniques used in the craft, as well as the types of precious and semi-precious stones and how they can be incorporated into a design. Meanwhile, a mechanical drafting for jewelers course covers the materials, mechanisms, and jewelry design as it relates to mechanical and plan drawing.

In addition to completing their core course work, students may be required to complete an internship or an independent jewelry project. However, an internship program may be uncommon for an online certificate program. Instead students may be required to complete an independent project or take several elective courses. These requirements may change by program, so make sure to check with your college or university to see what you need to do to graduate.

What Your Online Certificate in Jewelry Can Do for You

Graduates of an online certificate in jewelry program may qualify an individual for employment as a jeweler or a precious stone and metal worker. These professionals design, manufacture, repair, and appraise items of jewelry. Jewelers may use computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) programs to design products which are then mass produced. Nearly 20% of jewelers are employed by jewelry and silver manufacturing firms and 23% work for jewelry, luggage, and leather goods stores, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The minimum educational requirement for this profession is a high school diploma or a GED, although applicants may position themselves better for employment by obtaining a certificate or a college degree.

Jewelers and precious stone and metal workers earned a median annual salary of $35,170 in May 2010, according to the BLS. Employment of these professionals is expected to decline 5% from 2010 to 2020 because of the outsourcing of jewelry manufacturing to other countries. However, the BLS reports that opportunities will still exist for jewelers who have a specialization in design and new jewelers will be needed to replace those who retire. These projections are no guarantee of salary or job opportunity, which is determined by employer, location, and condition of the economy.
