Interior design is the process of modifying an interior space to suit a client’s needs by improving aesthetics and functionality. Students interested in helping clients improve their enjoyment of their living or working space should consider enrolling in an online interior design certificate program. Although interior design certificate programs are offered in the classrooms of traditional colleges and universities, distance learning provides working students with greater flexibility with their time. Instead of traveling to and from campus to attend classes, students of an online certification program can complete their course work at a time that is most convenient for them. That way they don’t have to work set aside other obligations they may have, such as to their family or their employer, to get an education.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in Interior Design

Students of an accredited online interior design certificate program may learn about the fundamentals of architecture and design, color theory, interior finishes, and how to prepare construction documents. In the course of their studies they may enroll in courses such as color theory, basic interior space planning, drafting, and perspective drawing for interiors. A color theory course discusses color harmony, how colors interact, and the use of colors to solve spatial problems. Meanwhile, a drafting course typically provides instruction in how to prepare architectural drawings, the use of drafting equipment, and drafting in scale.

Most online interior design certificate programs have no internship requirement. Instead students complete a number of required core and elective courses that allow them to specialize. A few examples of interior design elective courses are: designing with light, residential interior design, green design, and the history of furniture design. If a college or university does offer an internship program, then it can take the place of an elective course. Internships are typically done through a designated host organization, but they may be restricted by a student’s location.

What Your Online Certificate in Interior Design Can Do for You

Graduates of an online interior design certificate program may be qualified to work as interior designers. Interior designers create safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing interior environments for their clients. They determine what colors, finishes, furniture, flooring, and lighting to suit their client’s needs. Designers work on interior spaces in homes, office buildings, hotels, museums, and many other locations. Nearly 30% of interior designers work in the specialized design industry, while 14% work for architectural or engineering firms, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The BLS reports that designers need at least a bachelor’s degree with either a focus on interior design or a certificate in the discipline. Therefore a certificate program may be best for people who already have a bachelor’s degree that is unrelated to interior design but want to start a career in the industry.

Interior designers earned a median annual salary of $46,280, and the top 10% earned at least $84,900, in May 2010. Employment of interior designers is expected to increase 19%, which is as fast as average for all occupations, from 2010 to 2020, according to the BLS. The demand for interior designers will increase as homeowners and businesses want to modify their buildings to be more environmentally friendly, safe, or aesthetically appealing. However, these projections are no guarantee of salary or employment, which depends on location, applicant’s credentials, employer, and condition of the economy.
