In academic terms, hospitality management is the study of the administration of hotels, resorts, and other lodging facilities. Therefore, individuals who are interested in working in the industry would be well-served by enrolling in a hospitality certificate program online. Any hospitality certificate program provides students the knowledge and skills they need to succeed as employees and managers in the hospitality industry. However, online hospitality certificate programs give working professionals the opportunity to complete their course work and enhance their credentials on their own time without setting aside any other obligations they may have.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in Hospitality

An undergraduate online hospitality management curriculum may include courses such as hospitality operations, hospitality sales and marketing, and hospitality technology. A hospitality operations course may cover lodging and food and beverage operations, tourism, and gaming, as well as how to apply management skills to maximize results. Meanwhile, a hospitality sales and marketing course offers instruction in the sales and marketing strategies used by successful hotels and resorts, and a hospitality technology course discusses common point of sale, payroll, and property management systems used in the industry.

A graduate certification program may offer different courses. Generally speaking, a graduate-level online hospitality certificate program’s curriculum features study that is relevant to managers within the industry. It includes courses such as financial analysis of hospitality enterprises, convention and conference sales and services, and destination marketing and management. Regardless of the level of the program, students may need to complete a capstone project or a cooperative education course. Online students may also participate in an internship if they live near where their college or university is located. However, keep in mind that these opportunities may vary by institution.

What Your Online Certificate in Hospitality Can Do for You

Graduates of an accredited online hospitality certificate program may have the skills and knowledge required to work at various levels within the hospitality industry. For example, individuals with an undergraduate certificate in hospitality may be qualified for employment as a lodging manager at a hotel, motel, or resort. Lodging managers are responsible for ensuring guest comfort and the cleanliness of the facilities; interviewing, hiring, training, managing, and terminating employees; setting room rates and budgets; and approving expenditures. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the minimum education required to work as a lodging manager is a high school diploma, which means that graduates of a hospitality certificate program will be more competitive in the job market. However, larger establishments require their lodging managers to have at least a bachelor’s degree.

Lodging managers earned a median annual salary of $46,880, and the top 10% of earners received more than $87,920, in May 2010, according to the BLS. Employment of lodging managers is expected to increase 8% from 2010 to 2020, which is slower than average for all occupations. Although the tourism and travel industry is expected to grow, many companies are establishing more limited-service hotels and cutting expenses by eliminating some managers, the BLS reports. However, larger full-service hotels will still need managers to coordinate a wider range of services provided to visitors. Keep in mind that these projections are no guarantee of salary or opportunity of employment, which is determined by location, hiring agency, and condition of the economy.
