  • Education Prerequisites: Online certificate programs in IT Education are available to both undergraduate and graduate students who aspire to become IT instructors for a secondary or postsecondary education institution. Typically, there are two different types of online certification programs one can pursue after passing the state teaching certification: a provisional level I and level II certificate in IT education. Not all students have to take additional course work to obtain the provisional level I certificate in IT education, but it is recommended to be proficient in information technology and take courses as electives since you must pass the appropriate specialty test in IT.
  • Professional Prerequisites: Most online IT in Education certificate programs reward provisional certification for about six years if the applicant passes the specialty exam. After that, you must obtain your level II certification in IT education. A minimum of three years of working experience as an IT teacher/instructor is required to qualify to earn a level II certification. It is the applicant’s responsibility to renew both their state teaching license and IT certification every few years.
  • Average Program Length: Up to six months (full time); 1 year (part time)

Those who should consider pursuing online certificate programs in IT Education are those who already know that they want to teach this subject to students in public school and/or monitor computer labs and other courses that heavily deal with technology. Enrolling in an IT Education certificate program online can definitely make you more marketable and help increase your chances of earning employment at the school of your choice. The certification can’t act alone, but it can be added as an enhancement to your bachelor’s degree in education and make way for more opportunities.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in IT Education

As mentioned before, not all students have to take formal course work to take the specialty exam, but of course enrolling in an accredited online IT education certificate program can help prepare you for the specialty exam. The certificate programs online vary from school to school, but some of the courses you’ll be expected to take include: computer operations, computers for teachers, C++ Programming I, and e-commerce just to name a few. All bachelor degree seekers in education, no matter if one wants to earn a certificate in IT education or not, must participate in student teachin for a local school during their last year of college to get more hands-on experience working with children and creating lesson plans.

While online certificates in IT education are available to education majors and usually can be completed entirely online, it’s important to remember that you must first have a bachelor’s degree in education or be currently pursuing one. If you are pursuing your bachelor’s in education online then you must also prepare for the hours you must spend student teaching during your last few semesters of school. That said, your online program will convert to a hybrid course eventually.

What Your Online Certificate in IT Education Can Do for You

As stated before, those who earn a certificate in IT education can really help increase employment opportunities for those wanting to enter the K-12 teaching field, especially because computing is an evolving field and not everyone is qualified to work with certain technological tools and devices. Your certificate may also give you job security. The more certificates you earn in specialized subjects like IT education, the more versatility you possess. So you don’t have to be a history teacher your whole life if it’s something you later find out doesn’t interest you. You can earn your certificate and become an IT instructor instead.

A certification in IT education may be intended for future teachers, but it can also highly benefit those who want to shift gears and change careers altogether later in the future. For example, those with a certificate in IT education can find lucrative career possibilities as a training and development specialist for a corporation or even a course editor for desktop publishing or web design. Possibilities are theoretically endless since IT is such a desired field and your teaching skills will make you a great leader in whatever field you pursue.
