Teachers with TESOL training play an important role within America's education system and around the world. They help non-English-speaking students learn the language quickly and effectively. An online certificate program for TESOL is an ideal option for individuals who want to teach English in the United States or abroad. It is also a good choice for current teachers to boost their credentials or the individual who desires a career change. TESOL programs are offered on the campuses of traditional colleges and universities and through distance learning. Although the on-campus option has its advantages, an online certificate program enables students to complete their course work in their own time without having to set aside time in their daily schedule to travel to and from class.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in TESOL

Students of an accredited online TESOL certificate program learn how to design, adapt, and evaluate curricula; use technology and media to meet instructional needs; and effective instructional strategies for one-on-one tutoring and classroom teaching. As such, students may enroll in courses such as teaching form, meaning, and use; identity, community, and language learning; and planning and supporting language learning. A teaching form, meaning, and use course may cover the phonological, lexical, grammatical, and pragmatics of the English language and how it applies to adult learning. Meanwhile, a planning and supporting language learning course discusses the variables that influence communication in English language classrooms, international language and classroom discourse, and lesson plan creation.

An online TESOL certificate program's course work may include lesson planning, reading assignments, quizzes, exams, and research essays. It's uncommon for an online TESOL program to offer any internship opportunities. Instead, students complete their mandatory course work and, if their grade point average (GPA) meets the institution's standards, they graduate. However, program length, requirements, and extracurricular opportunities will vary by college or university.

What Your Online Certificate in TESOL Can Do for You

A graduate of an online TESOL certificate program may qualify for a wide variety of employment positions. If they have a bachelor's degree in education they could be employed as elementary, middle, or high school teachers. In May 2010, kindergarten and elementary school teachers earned a median annual salary of $51,380, while high school educators received $53,230, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Regardless of the level they instruct, teachers are responsible for planning lessons and curriculums, assessing a student's academic progress, communicating any issues with parents, and maintaining classroom discipline. Graduates of a TESOL program may also qualify for employment as an ESL specialist.

A TESOL certificate could also prepare an individual for volunteer work as a secondary English teacher with the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps was established in 1961 by President John F. Kenney to help the people of participating countries by meeting their need for trained men and women and to help promote understanding between Americans and people from other countries. Peace Corps volunteer English teachers develop teaching materials with local teachers, work with local students to improve their English skills, and work in after-school programs. Although a TESOL certificate program may give students the skills they need to teach effectively they may require further training from the Peace Corps.
