It’s common to find undergraduate and graduate degree programs in biology, such as a Master of Science in Biology or Bachelor of Science in Biology. However, online biology certificate programs are more specific and focus on individual disciplines of biology, such as marine biology, insect biology, or molecular biology. Many students who have earned a degree in biology will enroll in a biology certificate program online to supplement their degree. This can then be used to enter into a career in that specific area.

Completing an Online Biology Certificate Program

Given the wide variety of online certificate programs in biology, the amount of time it takes to complete them will vary. Undergraduate-level certificate programs can average between one and two years for full-time students. Graduate certificate programs in biology online can typically be completed in six months to one year on average by full-time students. However, these are only averages. The length of your particular program will depend on factors such as the number of required courses, the length of each course, the number of courses you can take at a time, and your ability to pass each course.

Unlike degree programs, which require students to complete a certain number of general education courses, such as history, government, and English, certificate programs will require only courses pertaining specifically to your area of study. Since there are so many areas of biology that you can choose to focus on at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, curriculums vary greatly by program. Undergraduate programs may require as many as 30 credit hours, or 10 courses. Graduate programs average around 15 credit hours, or five courses. In most cases, the assignments in your online certificate program will consist of essay, papers, reports, quizzes and exams. Some of the best online certificate programs in biology will require you to complete an internship prior to graduation, allowing you to gain valuable, hands-on training in the field.

What Your Online Biology Certificate Can Do for You

Your online biology certificate program will give you a thorough understanding of your chosen area of biology. Depending on your program and major, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills needed for field work, laboratory testing and experimentation, research and development, or teaching. Once you complete your certificate program, you will be prepared for your career. Because of the wide variety of areas you can choose to focus on, there are many different careers that an online biology certificate can lead to.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) provides employment information for many of the various career options available for those who complete an accredited online certificate program. For example, according to the BLS, microbiologists earn an average income of $65,920 per year and are expected to see a 13% increase in employment through 2020. Biological technicians are expected to see a 14% increase in employment and earn an average of $39,020 a year. Biochemists and biophysicists are expected to see a 31% increase in employment and earn an average of $79,390 per year. Keep in mind, what you actually earn will depend on several factors in addition to your chosen area, such as your employer, industry, location, and amount of experience.
