A Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) manages patient health information and medical records and works with all levels of health care, including clinical, administrative, and financial, to maintain patient and other medical data used throughout day-to-day procedures. An RHIA is a position applicable to several areas of the healthcare industry since they possess an understanding of medical, administrative, ethical, and legal requirements. An RHIA certificate program may be ideal for students who want to work in hospitals, physician offices, nursing care facilities, or home health care services.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in RHIA

RHIAs are trained in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health data standards, billing and coding classifications, and health care reimbursement. RHIA students may also learn health care statistics, and medical billing and coding software. Foundational course work in health, computer science, math, and biology may be required. Some RHIA certification programs will require clinical training or internship experience. Some programs may require RHIA students to choose a concentration.

RHIA certificate programs may train students to pass certification examination through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). States may require RHIA or medical billers and coders to gain certification through accredited traditional or accredited online RHIA certificate programs. States may require RHIAs to maintain certification through continuing education courses. States may also set licensure or certification requirements for specializations.

What Your Online Certificate in RHIA Can Do for You

A traditional or online RHIA certificate program is ideal for an individual interested in all aspects of health care operation. RHIAs require analytical and organizational skills to maintain and report clinical data. They must be computer proficient and adaptable to changes in health care computer software to maintain medical history, medical billing and coding information, insurance information, and other health data. RHIAs may advance to managerial positions through experience and additional RHIA certification.
