Sonographers use sound wave imaging equipment to diagnose medical conditions, and may be responsible for preparing and maintaining that imagining equipment. Sonographers may also prepare patients for procedure and review and maintain patient records. Sonographers may be responsible for analyzing sonographic images and presenting them to physicians and surgeons. A traditional or online sonography certificate program may require students to specialize in an area of the body such as abdominal, breast, musculoskeletal, neurologic, obstetric, or gynecologic stenographers.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in Sonography

A sonography certificate program may require course work in abdominal, OB/GYN, vascular, and cardiac sonography procedures. Curriculum may also include high resolution sonography, sonographic physics, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, health care and health policy, and health care ethics. A traditional or online sonography certificate program usually requires extensive clinical and practical training. Sonography students may specialize in a concentration within sonography.

Employment as a sonographer may also be obtained by completing a traditional or online radiologic technology or X-ray technician certification program and on-the-job training as a sonographer through an employer later on. Sonography employment usually requires professional certification from an accredited program. Certain states also require professional licensure. Licensure usually requires professional certification and the successful completion of sonography certification exams. Sonographers usually must maintain their training through continuing education courses.

What Your Online Certificate in Sonography Can Do for You

Individuals who want to work in the health care profession and help diagnose medical conditions may want to consider a sonography certification program. Sonographers work primarily in hospitals and physician offices. They interact with patients, physicians, and other medical professionals on a day-to-day basis, and require interpersonal skills, organization, and effective communication skills to analyze patients and communicate sonographic information to other healthcare professionals. A sonography certificate program may also be ideal for a medical professional looking to advance his/her understanding of medical procedure.
