  • Education Prerequisites: While a bachelor’s degree in engineering is typically needed to earn an entry-level position as an engineer in your field-of-choice, pursuing an engineering certificate program online can actually serve as an enhancement to your degree by helping you develop a specialized set of skills in engineering. These specialized skills can help you launch your way into “expert” territory as well as help expand your employment opportunities even further. Common online college certificate programs in the field of engineering typically include mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, automotive engineering, software engineering, engineering management, and financial engineering just to name a few. While exact prerequisites will vary within certification programs, most undergraduate accredited online engineering certificate programs require students to have completed at least 60 semester hours and have at least a 3.0 GPA before they can enroll. To earn the certification of choice, students must typically complete 18 credit hours in the certification course work and earn at least a “B” in each course. Some engineering certificate programs are available to non-engineering students.
  • Professional Prerequisites: There is no prior professional experience needed in order to enroll in an undergraduate online college certificate programs or online graduate certificate programs.
  • Average Program Length: 6 months (full time); 1 year (part time)

Those who are interested in complementing what they’ve learned/are learning in their engineering discipline can really benefit from earning a certification. That’s because online engineering certificate programs are designed to help students tailor their interests and career goals. For example, a chemical engineering student who wants to be able to truly understand and manage the environmental, social, and political impact and consequences of their work once he or she graduates can obtain a management in science and engineering certificate.

Completing an Online Certificate Program in Engineering

Course work will vary heavily depending on what specific online engineering certification program
you choose to pursue. For example, someone who wants to earn a certificate in software engineering will be required to complete about six different certificate-related courses to establish a solid understanding of computer science fundamentals such as numerical computing and numerical applications. Students are also typically required to enroll in a computing project course to work on a semester-long research project. Those pursuing a certificate in automotive engineering on the other hand are required to participate in a vehicle design/construction project.

Pursuing online certificate programs in engineering as opposed to the traditional method does differ slightly however. For example, you must be an independent worker since most of your assignments and readings will need to be completed with little or no supervision from your online professor. If you must take a hands-on project course, however, to earn your certificate (like building a vehicle), supervision will be mandated regardless of whether it’s an online class or not. You will either be required to go on campus or go to a designated site at least once a week to work under a proctor.

What Your Online Certificate in Engineering Can Do for You

Those who want to earn additional skills in a particular field of engineering without having to double-major in two subjects or apply to graduate school should pursue a certificate. A certificate is typically enough evidence to prove to employers that you have enough knowledge in a particular field. This can give you a competitive edge and set you apart from engineering bachelor’s degree holders without certificates when applying for jobs. Obtaining the appropriate certificate can also qualify you for more managerial positions and promotions.

A certificate is also a great choice because it can secure more job stability and perhaps even happiness. For example, if the field of engineering you earned your degree in starts to plummet or perhaps you later realize you don’t want to do that specific line of work for the rest of your life, you can always rely on your skills taught through your certification course work to open entirely new doors. For instance, you can seek a job working as a different type of engineer within your company or get hired by a new company who needs your certification skills. In short, your certificate will make you more versatile and give you more options throughout your entire professional career.
